U.S. consumer confidence plummeted in February, continuing its downward slide, as expectations hit a 17-year low.

The February consumer confidence index fell to 75.0 from a revised reading of 87.3 in January.

February's level is the index's lowest is almost 15 years, with the exception of the Iraqi War in 2003.

Economists had expected a February reading of 82.0.
